SmartAligners are printed directly as the planned aligner using Graphy's shape-memory material, so the aligner can be briefly warmed, seated more comfortably, and then recover toward its designed shape. Graphy is the South Korean dental-materials and 3D-printing company that developed the Tera Harz Clear material behind SmartAligners.
The warm-water step is there for a simple reason: make the aligner easier to place, then let it firm back up once seated.
